Where to eat in Nevis: saltfish, goat water and the local plate

The Nevisian dishes to know, shared with St. Kitts across the water, and the kitchens to start with. Each with its own contact details.

Nevis is the quieter, greener half of the two-island federation, a single volcanic cone across the narrows from St. Kitts, and the two islands share a kitchen. The food is African-rooted island cooking, generous and plain, and often best at lunch.

What to order

Stewed saltfish, served with spicy plantain, seasoned breadfruit and coconut dumplings, is the national plate and the one to order first. Goat water, the dark, peppery goat stew thickened to a gravy, is the old favourite and still the dish people line up for. From the sea, look for grilled spiny lobster and conch, often fried into fritters. Provisions and dumplings fill out the local plate.

The kitchens

Before you go

Goat water is cooked to a pot and runs out, so go early and call ahead. The number on each page is the business’s own.
