Things to do in St. Kitts: Brimstone Hill, the railway and the peninsula

St. Kitts is the larger, busier half of the two-island federation, a green volcanic island with a lot of history packed into a small space. The sights split between the fortress, the old sugar railway and the beaches of the southern peninsula.

Brimstone Hill Fortress is the headline, a UNESCO World Heritage site built by enslaved Africans high on a volcanic hill, one of the best-preserved forts in the Americas, with views across to the neighbouring islands. The St. Kitts Scenic Railway, the last working railway in the Caribbean, loops the island on track laid to carry sugar cane. South of Basseterre, the peninsula runs down to Frigate Bay and the Timothy Hill overlook, where the Atlantic and the Caribbean meet, and the best beaches line the way.
