Cottle Church
Round Hill, Nevis
About
Cottle Church, an Anglican church, is a 200 year old historic landmark, signifying as a place of worship for enslaved individuals and freed persons in the 19th century. A man named John Cottle and liberated Africans constructed the church in 1824, during a time when slaves were oppressed and the laws strictly prohibited such gatherings. However, this church was open to everyone regardless of social status. It was a safe haven for enslaved people, finding a sense of spiritual relief and community. After emancipation, the church continued to serve the local community and later in 1950, was damaged by a hurricane. Nevertheless, the ruins still remained and preserved as a historical site.
