St. Lucia is lush, mountainous and built for a certain kind of trip: the twin Pitons, the honeymoon reputation, the volcanic drama of the south. Where you stay shapes the whole thing, so it is worth choosing with care.

Soufriere, in the south-west, is the scenery: the Pitons, the Sulphur Springs and the island’s most dramatic, secluded setting, and the base for romance and quiet. Rodney Bay and Gros Islet in the north are the opposite, the hub for dining, nightlife and Reduit Beach, with the marina and the Friday jump-up close by. Cap Estate at the northern tip is the upmarket, villa-and-golf corner, Marigot Bay a sheltered yachting cove, and Castries the working capital and cruise port. Pick the south for views, the north for life.
