Dominica is a nature island, and its shopping follows the land. Forget duty-free; the buys worth carrying home are grown, distilled or woven here, and several are found nowhere else in quite the same form.
What to look for
The Kalinago, the island’s Indigenous people, weave baskets, mats and craft from larouma reed in patterns passed down for generations, the most distinctive thing to buy. Bay rum, distilled from the leaf of the bay tree, is an old Dominican product, once a cologne and aftershave. The island’s cocoa and coffee grow into bean-to-bar chocolate and local roasts, and its pepper sauces travel well. The Roseau market and the bayfront stalls cover produce, spice and craft.
