Highland House Ruin
About
The Highland House Ruin—also known locally as “Willy Bob”—is the evocative remnants of the 18th-century country residence of the Sir William Codrington family and is situated on one of the highest vantage points of the island of Barbuda in the twin-island state of Antigua & Barbuda. While what remains today are the foundational stones, cisterns and lower wall structures of the estate, the site offers visitors panoramic views over the coast, lagoon and Atlantic horizon—creating a striking combination of history and natural scenery.
Although access can involve a short walk or 4×4 ride across undeveloped terrain, the reward is a peaceful and meaningful heritage experience, far from crowded tourist hubs. Though the site does not provide extensive visitor amenities such as gift shops or fully developed visitor centers, the Highland House Ruin offers interpretive signage (in some guides) and serves as a key historical and cultural stop for heritage-minded travelers.
Guests benefit from visiting Highland House by gaining a deeper appreciation of Barbuda’s colonial past, enjoying striking vistas and having the flexibility to incorporate the stop into wider island tours or nature excursions. With minimal infrastructure, the experience rewards independent preparation—comfortable walking shoes, water, and readiness for a scenic hike are advised—but in return guests receive a quiet, reflective view of island history and landscape that many larger resorts or beaches cannot match.
